Solar eclipse this Wednesday evening, 12 August – with a viewing on Tooting Common by SW London Stargazers (see below)!
The partial solar eclipse will be seen in the UK and Ireland (weather permitting), when around 90-96% of the Sun will be covered by the Moon. This will be the most coverage seen from the UK and Ireland since the 1999 solar eclipse.
It’s important that you should never look directly at the Sun, even during an eclipse when some of its intense light is blocked. Doing so can severely damage your eyes.
SW London Stargazers are organising a free meet-up on Tooting Common to watch the eclipse. Visit their Meetup page to sign up.
The Royal Observatory at Greenwich has more information about the eclipse and how to view it safely – visit their website for more info.

Tooting-based property advisor Homes with Chuk talks about how he works and why he loves what he does...
“There’s so much more to this job than opening doors and letting people look around someone else’s home.
“There’s the constant follow-up with people who enquire then go quiet the moment you try to have an actual conversation. I don’t just book an enquiry straight into a viewing. No conversation, no viewing. It’s not just about answering questions, it’s about understanding someone’s motivation and what they’re actually looking for, before I bring a stranger into my seller’s home, especially knowing the effort that goes into getting a home ready to be seen.
“When I’m selling a home, I know it’s a huge moment for my sellers. They’ve got their own lives to get on with, so it’s my job to absorb the pressure and make it as smooth as I can. That’s why I only work with a limited number of homes at any one time. A lot of the time, people can’t move onto their next chapter until this one closes. I take that seriously.
“I’m part receptionist, part tour guide, part stylist, part therapist, part clairvoyant, part negotiator... but your full-time Personal Property Advisor. I wouldn’t change it for anything.
“I’m so grateful to my sellers for trusting me with their home and letting me be part of their story. I’m genuinely going to miss our WhatsApp chats. 😊
“I’m not perfect though. Stick around for the blooper on the last slide! 😅
“Born and raised in Tooting. Looking after a small handful of homes across Tooting, Balham & Streatham, personally.”

A major plan to make rivers and waterways suitable to swim in – including the River Wandle which runs through Wandsworth (including Earlsfield) – has been launched by The Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, reports My London.
Sir Sadiq Khan has blamed “decades of neglect” from water firms and Londoners for the state of the capital’s waterways.
The Mayor of London named Thames Water as one of the key culprits for dumping sewage into the city’s rivers but said they had recognised the consequences and have subsequently agreed to commit £1.7billion over the next five years to depolluting the water. Full story via My London.
The water fountain at Tooting Broadway – which we reported as working again on Saturday 1 August (first image) after months of it not being operational – is unfortunately out of action again (second image).
We’ve contacted Thames Water for more info…
