Last winter, Tooting’s St George’s Hospital was hit by a flood of flu as well as RSV, Covid and norovirus – closing wards, adding to the strain on Emergency Departments, and putting extra pressure on staff, as the virus gripped hospitals up and down the country.
Now that children have returned to school after increased social contact during half term, an increase in flu infections is anticipated – as this was also seen following the summer break.
With national data suggesting flu season has started early, the hospital group’s Chief Nursing Officer is urging people to proactively book their vaccine – before cases of severe illness and hospitalisations start to rocket.

Local charity Share (who have a Garden Centre in Tooting – see below) supports and empowers adults with a learning disability and autistic adults to live healthier, happier and more independent lives.
Many local people will know Share for their wonderful Share Garden Centre at Springfield Hospital, where they sell plants grown through their horticulture social enterprise. As part of the Springfield Village redevelopment, Share has moved slightly, and is now based in Building 32 on Lapidge Drive, near the Burntwood Lane entrance. They’re still very much part of the local area, continuing their fantastic work.
Alongside horticulture, Share offers a range of courses and training programmes including textiles, art, health and wellbeing, maths and English, and a community-based course where students explore and take part in activities locally. Each course is designed to help students build confidence, learn new skills, and gain greater independence.
There are plenty of ways to get involved and support Share:
😊 Volunteer – help out in the garden, support classes on site or in the community, or become a befriender to offer friendship and encouragement to a student near you.
💚 Donate – every contribution helps Share continue providing life-changing opportunities.
🪴 Visit and buy plants – the Share Garden Centre is open to the public on weekdays 10am-4pm, and always welcomes new visitors.
Find out more about Share Community, their courses and ways to support them via their website.
Congratulations to Patrick, Damian, Oliver and TJ on climbing Mount Kenya and raising over £2,500 for Tooting’s St George’s Hospital Charity!
Patrick received emergency heart surgery at St George’s last year, and wanted to give back to the NHS team who saved his life.
Although a challenging trek, Patrick described it as an adventure of a lifetime – through steep climbs, tricky terrain and even bouts of altitude sickness, their strength, determination and teamwork carried them all the way to the top.
If you’d like to read more about Patrick’s journey before the trek, check out his blog.
If you’d like to organise a fundraising event for St George’s, you can find out more via their website.
Padel sessions in Furzedown! Are you a padel fan, or looking to try out this sport that everyone’s talking about?
Luna Padel Club is a social padel community that brings people together in a fun environment, focusing on social play, welcoming beginners, seasoned players, and everyone in between!
Whether you’re looking to stay active, meet new people, or give padel a try, Luna Padel Club invites locals to pick up a racket and join in.

Sessions take place at Furzedown Recreation Centre on Ramsdale Road every Sunday – visit Eventbrite for more info and to book.

Thanks to them all for the beautiful display!
