Join the Big Tooting Commons Bio Blitz on Sunday 27th April, 10am-1pm!
The event, based at The Woodfield Pavilion, and part of City Nature Challenge 2025, aims to identify trees, plants, birds, fungus, amphibians, mammals and more from across Tooting Commons from Graveney Woods to the Balham Triangle, creating a baseline of local nature to increase biodiversity for future generations.
Organisers say, "Started in 2016 as a competition between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the City Nature Challenge (CNC) has grown into an international event, motivating people around the world to find and document wildlife in their own cities.
"Run by the Community Science teams at the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, the CNC is an annual four-day global bioblitz at the end of April, where cities are in a collaboration-meets-friendly-competition to see what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal.
"This will be a fantastic opportunity to connect children and adults from across the community with local nature on our very own Tooting Commons."
To find out more, or if you'd like to volunteer to help run the event, please email David at dnormski@icloud.com
Organisers will be using the iNaturalist app, which you can download in preparation at https://www.inaturalist.org/

North Mitcham Plot Owners Association (NMPOA) have proudly opened their latest site improvement – a Kazuba waterless composting toilet to serve its population of over 100 growers and gardeners!
The association, based in the area of North Mitcham/Furzedown Borders, sits on land between Mitcham Eastfields and Streatham and has been operating since 1921. The new fully accessible toilet, which requires minimum maintenance, is the first major financial funding the association has ever received and fulfils a need identified by NMPOA's members ensuring the plots and amenities are accessible to all users. The National Lottery’s Community Fund fully funded the toilet.
Allotment plots are owned individually and when they are not being worked, the allotment committee tries hard to persuade owners to consider taking a tenant from the waiting list or existing plotholders to give up a bit of their space if they are finding it too much work. Only people living locally will be considered, and interested parties can email nmallotment@gmail.com to join the waitlist.

Membership includes access to all 12 of their monthly events, plus access to their four popular sub-groups: Supper Club, Craft Club, Book Club and Culture Club.
Women are invited to try out their first meeting as a guest, for a small donation, before deciding to join.
Becky Warburton, President of Tooting WI, says, "I’m so excited to see the group move to our new home – it’s an exciting next step in our fantastic history. When we launched in 2016, we were one of only a few groups where you could be part of such an energised, modern community – meeting local women, having fun and making friends. Times have changed, and we can’t wait to welcome both new and familiar faces to this exciting chapter in our story."

A bid to run an off-licence next to a shop which allegedly sold alcohol and vapes to underage children has been refused, due to a family connection between the businesses, reports South London Press.
The Met opposed Neeto Kaur Sachdeva’s plans to sell booze at Mitcham Road Local, in Tooting, over concerns it shared the same staff as World Superstore next door, which lost its licence in 2023.
Wandsworth Council’s licensing committee rejected Ms Sachdeva’s application to sell alcohol every day at the shop, at 83 Mitcham Road, after considering the Met’s concerns at a hearing on March 12.
