The fantastic Furzedown Farmers Market, returns THIS SATURDAY 6th JUNE, 9.30am–1.30pm – with a jumble sale and a face painter too!

The popular monthly market take places at Penwortham Primary School, and will feature a brilliant mix of local food, produce, crafts, gifts, and LOTS of children’s items - all your favourite traders, and a few new ones too. There’ll also be a mini jumble sale in the playground with lots of pre-loved items at very low prices!

The much-loved, diverse market is a fantastic place to enjoy a Saturday morning / lunchtime. Grab a coffee, something delicious for brunch / lunch, pick up fresh bits for the home, and enjoy browsing and shopping! Dogs are very welcome and there’ll be live music & vibes throughout from South London Vinyl Experience!

Event Organiser Iram Siddiqui tells us, “Karak & Kanvas is a women-only South Asian-inspired paint and karak afternoon with a twist, combining painting, rich karak chai, south Asian treats, and community connection in a warm and creative space. The event is a fundraiser in support of my upcoming charity deployment to Bangladesh with Reach Every Human charity.

“Funds raised from Karak & Kanvas will go directly toward supporting this deployment and the humanitarian work being carried out on the ground.

Her Majesty Queen Camilla opened the St George’s Hospital “Garden in the Sky” yesterday (located on the balcony next to Neuro Intensive Care) for the benefit of patients, their families, and staff of the Tooting hospital.

The garden was created through a partnership with the John King Brain Tumour Foundation and St George’s Hospital Charity, transforming a previously unused space into an accessible roof garden, directly connected to the intensive care unit.

Horticulture students from local charity Share (who have a Garden Centre in Tooting – see below), recently spent time at The Woodfield Pavilion on Tooting Common – with the sunny weather quite a contrast to their visit last December, when they planted fruit trees in the orchard.

They came back to water and add woodchip mulch to the 30 young trees that are now taking root.

Congratulations to Tooting resident and family barrister Lucy Masoud on being named Junior Pro Bono Barrister of the Year at Advocate’s 2026 Bar Pro Bono Awards!

Lucy was specifically commended for her commitment to access to justice and her work in family law, including the founding of The Faisal Luke Pro Bono Project, an initiative established in 2023 in memory of her brother, whose name it bears.

The Advocate Bar Pro Bono Awards celebrate barristers who go above and beyond to provide free legal assistance to those who need it most. Masoud’s award reflects both the breadth of her pro bono practice and the lasting legacy of the project she created to honour her brother.

Queen Camilla opens St George’s Hospital “Garden in the Sky” in Tooting

The Queen was introduced to a patient who is one of St George’s own brain surgery nurses, and is currently being treated in the neurosurgery ward she usually works in after suffering a brain haemorrhage two weeks ago.

Catherine Oppong-Barbo, who has worked as a neurosurgery nurse at St George’s since 2017, said, “Now I’m using the balcony as a patient, I can put myself in their shoes and truly feel how big of an impact this is going to make”.

Laura King MBE, founder and Chair of The John King Brain Tumour Foundation said, “This year marks ten years since my husband John died. After being diagnosed with a glioblastoma brain tumour in 2015, he was treated by the incredible team at St George’s Hospital.

“We cherished the access to the gardens on the McKissock ward and wanted to help ensure that this kind of space was also available for the hundreds of patients admitted to the Neuro Intensive Care Unit each year. A space that provides families with a dignified, peaceful setting away from clinical surroundings.”

Research suggests that nature-based rehabilitation may help improve the recovery from the impact of brain injury by improving motivation, regulating mood and improving sensory-motor and cognitive functions.

Queen Camilla unveiled a commemorative plaque and a sculpture by Emma Rodgers, inspired by a mighty English oak symbolising strength, wisdom, nurturing and healing. Its leaf canopy is made from hands applauding the NHS.

Trustees needed at The Woodfield Pavilion on Tooting Bec Common!

The Woodfield Pavilion was a disused sports pavilion on the fringes of the common, and The Woodfield Project charity was set up in 2014 to refurbish and relaunch it as a community centre. In the twelve years since, the Pavilion has become a hub for the Common community, offering events and activities that support the Project’s charitable aims of enhancing social wellbeing, bringing people together, and encouraging appreciation of and care for the surrounding natural environment. 

Now, new Pavilion Manager Eddie has great ideas for expanding the provision for the community, and The Project is seeking to add to their trustee board to give him the support he needs.

They’re looking for local people keen to get involved and help them grow our reach and the activities they can provide. So, if you’re passionate about the area and local communities, and have the skills and enthusiasm to ensure that they continue to thrive, they’d like to hear from you!

Friends of Streatham Cemetery invite you to a FREE guided walk looking at deciduous trees, led by local tree enthusiast Andrew Graver, this Sunday 31 May.

Meet at the Chapel near the main entrance on Garratt Lane, SW17 0LT at 12.30pm. Tea & homemade cakes and jars of delicious Dead Good Honey will be available after the walk (please bring cash!).

The London Festival of Architecture (LFA) is back for a month long celebration of architecture and city-making next month, with Wandsworth Town and the Wandle Delta (just down the road from Tooting) joining as a new LFA neighbourhood.

“Through our Open Afternoons, we invite the public in to find out how we offer outstanding care to the living and the dead – and to demystify death and funerals a little in the process.”

The Open Afternoon starts with an introductory talk from Clare, after which members of the Poppy’s team will answer visitors’ questions - from how a person is brought into Poppy’s care, to why you can be sure the ashes you receive back after someone is cremated belong to your person.

After the formal session has closed at 3pm, attendees are invited to stay for tea, coffee and more conversation.

Congratulations to local runner Hannah on completing the London Marathon last month – with every step raising money for Wandsworth Foodbank!

Hannah says, “I chose to raise money for Wandsworth Foodbank because I wanted to support people in my local community who are facing difficult circumstances in a way that was practical, direct and could make an immediate difference.

“The day of the marathon itself was tough (and much hotter than my winter training), with the seemingly endless streets of Canary Wharf nearly bringing me to tears, but crossing the finish line made it all worth it. I’m incredibly proud this challenge helped raise over £1000 for the foodbank and I hope it’s gone some way towards making a small difference to a few people’s days.”

Award-winning South London food charity Be Enriched has been using food to bring people together by turning surplus food into nutritious three-course meals and offering spaces of connection to those who need it most. They’ve been helping to reduce waste and tackle social isolation for people facing socio-economic inequality for over a decade.

Tooting was their flagship canteen, the place where Be Enriched first began back in 2013. What started as a small community dining project has grown into three Community Canteens, a Food Bus and a Food Float across South London.

Congratulations to Tooting resident Ralph on the launch of One Night, a non-alcoholic, ready-to-drink, spicy margarita!

Ralph is a drinks industry veteran with over 20 years of experience, including at TENZING Natural Energy and Red Bull. After cutting back on alcohol, Strampfer found himself repeatedly disappointed by what was available.

Ralph continues, “I spent months looking for something worth having as an alcohol alternative at bars, festivals or to bring to a dinner or summer party, when you just want to have a good time with your friends. Something fiery and interesting that actually tastes like a proper drink. Alcohol free beer has done a brilliant job. But cocktails? Most options taste like a sugary cordial or a flat juice. They just don’t earn their place in the glass.

“One Night is the drink I couldn’t find. Fiery, sophisticated, layered, uplifting. A proper cocktail with no compromise on flavour, no sacrifice on the night and no bill to pay in the morning.”

One Night will also be available at festivals and venues across the country this summer, including Wellnergy Festival in Wimbledon on the 12th and 13th June.

Tooting couple, Arabella and Harry, have launched Stone & Peacock, an online homeware brand selling handmade Indian block print table linen and cushions!

The idea came while travelling through India on a sabbatical—Arabella and Harry discovered Jaipur’s block print heritage and were instantly hooked. With their own wedding just months away, they commissioned 200 ft of custom table runners and 180 hand-printed napkins for the big day, and Stone & Peacock grew from there, with the goal of sharing a little of that colour and craft back home in the UK.

As well as their ready-made collection, Stone & Peacock also offer fully bespoke orders for weddings and events, working to design custom prints, colour palettes, and sizing.

Professor Khalil received the Outstanding Achievement Award in the Noor Inayat Khan Muslim Woman of the Year category for her outstanding work in maternal and fetal medicine.

Taj Daar e Madina Masjid & Education Centre hosts an Eid in the Park event for Eid al-Adha this Wednesday 27th May, from 8.30am on Tooting Bec Common (at the corner of Tooting Bec Road and Dr Johnson Avenue).

Organisers say, “Join us for a joyful family start to Eid! Please bring prayer mats, chairs, water, and smiles for a warm, welcoming celebration for brothers and sisters.”

Tooting History Group (THG) are delighted to launch the Tooting Historic Shops Trail, as part of the Wandsworth Heritage Festival!

Using a recently acquired collection of historical photos, THG have devised a walking trail of 27 shops in Tooting. Each participating shop will display an illustrated information board about the businesses that previously occupied the premises.

Trail maps and Young Explorer packs are available to pick up at Tooting Library and some participating shops, or you can visit the THG website to find out more and download the map/Young Explorers pack.

The Met Police say, “Fraud can affect anyone within the community, so we want to make sure you have the tools and knowledge to protect yourself from it. It comes in many different forms and across varying channels, whether that’s through emails, phone calls or in person encounters. Some adults may be even more vulnerable to fraud or financial abuse, but it is something that everyone can be at risk of. Magan Gallery in Tooting Bec presents Spring Tide 2026, a multidisciplinary exhibition of contemporary art, jewellery and design, 29 May–25 June.

Following the success of the gallery’s inaugural open call exhibition in 2025, which featured more than 60 artists and attracted over 150 visitors on opening night, the new edition continues MAGAN’s commitment to dialogue across generations, disciplines and artistic journeys.

Transport for London urges customers to seek staff help to recover items that fall onto the tracks rather than risk danger trying to retrieve items themselves.

The appeal comes after the number of reported incidents involving items on Tube tracks more than doubled between 2022 and 2025.

People risk serious injury to themselves and others, as well as prosecution and a fine, by going onto live tracks and are reminded to always seek help from trained staff who can safely retrieve items.

Trained staff members use a Track Retrieval Device to pick up items without needing to go onto the tracks. The device has a range of attachments that retrieve objects of varying sizes, from mobile phones and earbuds, to larger items such as hats and shoes. Occasionally, staff may need to go onto the tracks to retrieve the item and sometimes wait until the end of service. Staff always aim to return the item to its owner as quickly as possible. Kristen tells us, “From Clapham North to Tooting Bec, I’ve called every stop down the Northern Line home over the last 20 years.

“In preparing for MasterChef, I’d make the pilgrimage from Moxons in Clapham South for fresh fish, to Balham Farmers Market, Waitrose, Chadwicks Butcher, Tolians for fresh produce and Bhavin’s for Asian ingredients.

“We are so lucky to have such wonderful produce and restaurants right on our doorstep in Tooting. I’m excited to bring a taste of South West London to the most famous kitchen on television.”

Congratulations to Tooting firefighters Leoni Munslow and Katie Holloway, who have been honoured at Buckingham Palace with the first garden party of the year!

Leoni and Katie, both based at Tooting Fire Station on Trinity Road in Tooting Bec, campaigned for improved maternity support at the Brigade. Their work has led to significant positive change for both women and parents, providing better provision for both current staff and future employees.

Leoni and Kate were just two of the London firefighters honoured for their lifesaving and charity work at Buckingham Palace. The celebration formed part of an event for frontline workers to thank them for their service and charitable endeavours, with Brigade staff recognised for both their work in London and internationally.

“Michel came to see us around a year ago with a shoulder that had stopped him playing tennis for 18 months. He couldn’t lift his arm above his head without excruciating pain.

Confident Maternity Fosterers Needed! 🐱 RSPCA South London are inundated with rescue requests for pregnant cats and mums with kittens, but without enough suitable foster space, they simply can’t say yes to them all right now.

As a self funded branch, they don’t have rescue facilities or a central cattery. Every pregnant mum or vulnerable family they take in relies entirely on the kindness of their foster network opening up their homes.

The charity is urgently looking for confident maternity fosterers who may be able to support pregnant cats, nursing mums and their kittens during one of the most important stages of their journey.

They know fostering can sound daunting, but you would not be doing it alone. The RSPCA funds all veterinary care, provides transport to appointments, and supplies starter equipment to help you get set up. Their team will also support you throughout!

By fostering, you could be giving a vulnerable mum the safe, quiet space she needs to bring her kittens into the world away from danger, and giving those kittens the very best possible start.

Meet Youth Medaid, a youth-led Community Interest Company (CIC) based at Tooting’s City St George’s University!

Youth Medaid redistributes surplus medical supplies to individuals, organisations, and communities in need. In the past, they have successfully sent medical donations to Sierra Leone, Uganda, India and Lebanon. Currently, they’re coordinating donations to organisations in Zambia and Nepal.

Youth Medaid are looking to connect with organisations in Tooting and across South London who may have excess or unused medical equipment to donate. If you can help, please email resourcesteam.yma@gmail.com

TfL is urges customers to seek staff help to recover items that fall onto the tracks

Transport for London (TfL) is urging customers to seek staff help to recover items that fall onto the tracks rather than risk danger trying to retrieve items themselves.

The appeal comes after the number of reported incidents involving items on Tube tracks more than doubled between 2022 and 2025.

Mark Evers, TfL’s lead on Customer Insight, Strategy and Experience, said: “When a valuable or important personal belonging falls onto the tracks, it’s natural to panic, but that moment of panic can cloud our judgement. Going onto the tracks to retrieve the item is extremely dangerous, endangering ourselves and others. No item’s worth that risk. We urge everyone to stay behind the yellow line and take precautions to prevent items from falling. If something does fall, our trained staff are ready to help, to save you putting yourself and others at risk.”

A customer who contacted TfL after this experience happened to them, said: “I dropped my phone on the tracks at Stratford station and the staff member I spoke to was extremely polite, patient and helpful. He spent a long time helping me look for my phone and, when we couldn’t see it on the tracks, arranged for the night staff to look for it so I could collect it from the office in the morning. I was so grateful for their efforts.”
