Tooting Fire Brigade came to the rescue of a baby fox trapped on the roof above shops & houses on Balham High Road last week – helping it safely back down to the ground. You can watch videos of the incident on our Instagram.

Thames Water has become the latest water company to announce a hosepipe ban, officially beginning today, Thursday 23rd July.

Five other water companies have already imposed bans; about 23 million people will be banned from using hosepipes by this weekend, as England and Wales moves closer to drought status. Full story via The Guardian.

Smallwood Primary in Tooting is a partner school with Learn to Love to Read, and when they said they needed board books for their resource base, which is expanding this September, they turned to Howden Tooting to support the school and charity.

Marian Dowling, Office Manager at Howden said: “When Learn to Love to Read approached us about a project at Smallwood Primary School, we were delighted to help.

“The school’s Early Years provision needed board books for its youngest readers but was facing challenges in funding their purchase.

“Thanks to our donation, a collection of new children’s books has now been provided to support early literacy and encourage a love of reading from the very start of a child’s educational journey.

Furzedown got together on Saturday night to celebrate their community heroes!

Dawn Thomas, chair of Furzedown Community Network (FCN) introduced author Marcel Theroux (brother of Louis Theroux), and crime court judge & crime writer, Nicola Williams.

Together they presented over 30 awards to local people of all ages who make the Furzedown community such a vibrant place to live – from guerilla gardeners on the roundabouts and green fingered Furzedown FACE fundraisers, to musicians, writers and artists who have volunteered their skills.

Awards were also presented to the volunteers and teams from the Furzedown Project and Furzedown Youth Centre as well as everyone behind events like the FCN Fun Day, Jazz on the Lawn, Furzedown Litfest, Furzedown and Tooting Pride, and many other community activities.

The hall was packed and everyone was entertained by local singers, dancers and musicians, followed by celebratory bubbles!

A very happy retirement to Tooting resident Ulis, who’s been Fircroft School’s Lollipop Lady for the last 11 years!

Ulis, a familiar and much-loved face around Tooting, tells us, “I am retiring and so this is the end of my lollipopping! I have had such a wonderful time working with the families and staff at Fircroft School and the wider community.

“I want to say a huge thank you to every person who has said hello, waved, tooted and stopped for a little chat, commented on my earrings and footwear, and told me how brave I am to be out in all weathers.

“I have met so many lovely people and dogs on my walks & bus rides to & from work as well as on my corners.

“It has been real privilege to have this job. Thank you.”

Got a great idea for how to improve access to sports and physical activity for residents across Wandsworth? Your initiative could benefit from a cash boost of up to £5,000 through the latest round of Wandsworth Council’s sports development grant fund.

The grants are split into two categories, covering community access as well as grants specifically designed to boost opportunities for inclusive access for women and girls.

Grants for new sports programmes and activities are worth up to £5,000 each, while grants to pay for infrastructure projects and work that improves physical facilities or equipment have no maximum amount.

Applications must be made by 25 August 2026; decisions will be made within six weeks of the closing date. Full info, including how to apply, via Wandsworth Council.

Ever spotted this statue of speedway legend Ronnie Moore outside the AFC Wimbledon Stadium on Plough Lane? Ronnie Moore MBE was a New Zealand international motorcycle speedway rider who won the Individual World Speedway Championship, in 1954 and 1959.

Ronnie also raced with The Wimbledon Dons, a professional motorcycle speedway team who operated from the Wimbledon Stadium from 1929 until 1991, and 2002 until 2005. The team were seven times champions of Britain.

The statue – sculpted entirely from scrap metal material from the old stadium (bikes, signs, tools and fencing) was installed by Wimbledon in Sporting History - WISH, an independent registered charity and registered museum, created to inspire its visitors through sporting history.

Their purpose is to “safeguard, curate, celebrate and showcase Wimbledon’s sporting heritage and cultural stories, plus those of other local sports and their cultural influence.”

Thames Water is carrying out more works on Upper Tooting Road (A24), at the junction with Ansell Road, Derinton Road and Lessingham Avenue. Temporary traffic lights are in place, and there is no traffic access to Ansell Road, Derinton Road and Lessingham Avenue from Upper Tooting Road while the works take place. Traffic delays are expected.

Balham resident & mum, Harriet Robertson, would like to raise local awareness for the health condition, PANDAS – a condition that her young daughter, Sienna was diagnosed with earlier this year. Early recognition of PANDAS really matters and improves treatment outcomes.

Harriet shares her story: “Last year Sienna had tonsillitis seven times and struggled with anxiety – in particular, separation anxiety.

“In February, we saw a sudden shift in her behaviour overnight. She developed sensory issues, became very hyperactive, started having tics, OCD behaviours, and rage outbursts. It didn’t feel like ‘her’ anymore, which was scary to experience as a parent.

“We later learned that this was PANDAS – a condition where a strep infection triggers inflammation in the brain, leading to sudden neuropsychiatric symptoms.

“We were incredibly lucky to see a specialist and get a diagnosis. Sienna has now completed her treatment and we’re so grateful that her symptoms have significantly improved. As a parent, having answers has changed everything.

“Early recognition of PANDAS really matters and improves treatment outcomes. That is why I am running the Royal Parks half marathon in October to raise money for PANS PANDAS UK.

“This incredible charity supports families living with the neuropsychiatric conditions PANS and PANDAS, and is working tirelessly so that every family living with PANS or PANDAS can access the right care pathway, treatment and support when they need it most.

“My aim is to raise awareness of PANDAS so that parents know what symptoms to look out for after a strep infection and can seek medical advice as early as possible.”

Run Talk Run SW17 is a free mental health and running community which hosts weekly 5k runs every Monday evening, meeting inside downstairs at the Wheatsheaf Tooting pub by Tooting Bec tube station. Everyone is welcome and there is a safe place to leave your bag!

All paces are welcome! No pressure, just a chatty 5K with friendly faces.

Run Talk Run is a friendly and supportive group that aims to make both running and mental health support less intimidating and more accessible, offering a safe and open space to talk about how you are doing (the good times, not-so-good times and everything in between).

Drones have been picking up samples for testing, and delivering them in just over three minutes to the lab at Tooting’s St George’s Hospital since February.

The drones help deliver faster, reliable results at a time of heightened pressure on NHS services.

South West London Pathology provides services to a patient population of 1.8 million people, processing 51 million samples a year for all NHS trusts and GP services in south west London. Working with British healthcare logistics startup Apian, SWLP aims to deploy drones across its network, including St Helier, Croydon and Kingston hospitals.

Over 2,000 patients have already benefited from deliveries that are up to 85% faster than by road. By speeding up test results, the service allows clinicians to provide more timely and effective care for patients.

“What once may have seemed like something from a sci-fi film is now very much a reality across our hospital sites, as drones help us to deliver faster and greener care, cutting emissions while continuing to prioritise patient safety”, says Kate Slemeck, Managing Director for St George’s, Epsom and St Helier Hospitals Group, on how drones collect samples from the Nelson Health Centre in Raynes Park and deliver them to the lab at St George’s for testing – cutting delivery time from around 20 minutes to just over three.

If you witness a fire, including a fire on Tooting or Wandsworth Common (or any green spaces), please report it immediately by calling 999.

The risk of wildfires in London will grow from ‘elevated’ to ‘extreme’ from Saturday until at least Monday, due to factors including prolonged dry weather and heat as well as wind speed and direction. The majority of wildfires are caused by accidental or deliberate human behaviour.

Brigade Assistant Commissioner Tom Goodall said: “With so many of London’s parks and open spaces close to properties and communities, it is vital the public take as much care as possible to prevent these fires starting in the first place. We have seen first-hand in London, as well as around the world, just how devastating the impact wildfires can have on livelihoods.

“That means no disposable barbecues in parks and open spaces, taking rubbish home with you if no bins are available, and ensuring your cigarettes are discarded of properly.

“If you’re having a barbecue at home, make sure it is on level ground and away from decking, fences, trees and balconies.”

The Brigade is reminding landowners and local authorities to ensure they are managing their land appropriately during the hot and dry weather. This includes creating fire breaks, such as cutting the grass back, particularly where open spaces back onto properties.

The Brigade is constantly monitoring where its resources need to be so it is ready to keep London safe in an emergency. Specialist 4x4 Terrain Support Vehicles, which allow firefighters to deal with wildfires more efficiently, are ready to tackle any fires in the open, and the water rescue capability is prepared for any emergency involving London’s 370 miles of waterways.

To celebrate Small Charities Week recently, Tooting’s Work and Play Scrapstore thanked their 50-strong group of volunteers by treating them to a day out!

The volunteers visited Fulham Palace in West London and learned about the 13 acres of botanic gardens, historic rooms and 6,000 years of history. They explored the home of the Bishop of London for over 1300 years and discovered how the bishops and their families shaped the house and garden over the centuries.

The Scrapstore’s volunteers are crucial to their operation as a small charity; they sort, sift, pack and fill the shelves at Scrapstore each week, making sure members can view all the latest donations that have come in.

“As a small charity we wouldn’t be able to operate without volunteers,” explains Jen Dolan, Operations Manager. “We must be doing something right as many have been with us for decades.”

Scrapstore is a fantastic treasure trove, presenting waste and surplus goods as arts and crafts materials to inspire creativity. Congratulations to Tooting resident and author William Ellis-Rees on the publication of his book, The Tooting Tragedy: Cruelty, Cholera and Children of the Victorian Poor.

The book is a narrative account of events in Surrey Hall, a residential school for workhouse children in Tooting Broadway where large numbers of children died in an outbreak of cholera in 1849.

William tells us, ”The tragedy was the subject of searching official investigations, which exposed the many failings of Surrey Hall’s proprietor, Bartholomew Peter Drouet, not least his inhumane treatment of the children. Drouet found himself at the centre of a media storm, including angry newspaper articles published by Charles Dickens, and eventually he went on trial at the Old Bailey.

“I wrote the book partly to chronicle what seemed to me to be one of the most dramatic moments in the history of nineteenth-century Tooting, but also to give a voice to the children who experienced Surrey Hall. Many of the victims of the cholera outbreak were buried in the churchyard of St Nicholas Church, and I am reminded of the scale of the tragedy every time I look at the memorial plaque on its south-facing wall, which was requested by local schoolchildren in 1989.

“The site of Drouet’s establishment is now occupied by the HSBC bank, J J Moon’s and MERKUR Slots, and, behind these, the houses standing between Garratt Terrace and Garratt Lane.”

The Tooting Tragedy: Cruelty, Cholera and Children of the Victorian Poor is published by Pen and Sword Books and is widely available in bookshops and online.

Record numbers of patients sought help at Tooting’s St George’s Hospital last week following June’s heatwave, with the nearby Wimbledon tennis tournament also having an impact.

On Monday 29 June, St George’s had the highest number of people attending its Emergency Department in over three years – as patients suffered with dehydration and Acute Kidney Injury, which particularly affects older and more vulnerable people.

During last month’s heatwave, St George’s used AI to assist them in identifying and contacting more than 2,000 vulnerable patients, offering to reschedule or arrange virtual appointments – and will be doing the same this week to help patients avoid unnecessary travel.

A St George’s spokesperson said, “Ageing hospital buildings weren’t designed for extreme temperatures, so dedicated NHS teams are doing everything they can to keep people safe and comfortable, such as providing extra drinking water and prioritising air-con for the sickest patients.

People can keep themselves and others safe by:

• Spending time in the shade, especially between 11am and 3pm
• Wearing a hat, sunglasses and loose, light clothing
• Using sunscreen SPF 30 or higher and reapplying regularly
• Drinking plenty of fluids regularly – don’t wait until you feel thirsty
• Choosing water or diluted drinks and avoiding too much alcohol or caffeine
• Looking out for others around you, especially those who may be more vulnerable

If you do need medical help that is not an emergency, please use NHS 111 online 111.nhs.uk or call 111 so you can get the right help quickly.

For minor illnesses or injuries, your local pharmacy can offer expert advice, and in some cases can offer treatment without you needing to see a GP.

For serious or life-threatening emergencies, call 999.

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters tackled a fire on Mitcham Lane in Furzedown in the early hours of Saturday 27th June. The fire is believed to have been caused by a lightning strike. More info on our website.

The Furzedown FACE Charity Garden Gig last Friday was a wonderful evening of live music and delicious food, raising over £2500 for local causes!

Run by a local group of friends and neighbours, the evening saw a fantastic line-up of talented local singers and musicians, including the powerful voice of singer-songwriter Jennifer Owens. There was a delicious meal and a fun ‘name that tune’ challenge, plus a great raffle!

FACE were raising money for inspiring local causes, including South London MND Association, who came along to thank them for raising an incredible £90,000 over the last 15 years!

Money will also go to The Furzedown Project, who are fundraising for ways to keep their building cool, and Furzedown Youth Centre, who want to open on Tuesday evenings and offer more activities.

Tooting Pharmacy Practice at 175 Upper Tooting Road has permanently closed after 45 years in business, as owner Indrajit is retiring.

Balham Bark, the much-loved independent dog store on Emmanuel Road on the edge of Tooting Common, will be closing at the end of August after three & a half years.

The good news is that The Handsome Hound Grooming will continue under new management from 1st September – with Andrew beginning a well-deserved move towards semi-retirement.

Over the coming weeks, Andrew will be personally introducing clients to the new owner to ensure a smooth and familiar transition. The Handsome Hound will continue welcoming both existing and new grooming clients, and will also retain a carefully selected retail range for everyday essentials.

Renowned chef & local resident, Adam Byatt has opened Rosina restaurant at 35 Bellevue Road, where Brinkley’s was previously located! Adam’s also behind the Michelin-starred Trinity restaurant in Clapham.

The neighbourhood restaurant is inspired by the love that Adam has for Italian cuisine, produce and hospitality and is named after his daughter Rosie.

When announcing the new restaurant, Adam said on his Instagram page, “Rosina is a space I want people to really enjoy, a restaurant to use all week, a Wednesday on a whim, an intimate Friday date night, as well as a family get together over the weekend.”

RE-OPENED IN TOOTING: Chatkhara is back open at 15 Upper Tooting Road! The long-established Pakistani and Indian eatery (sometimes known as The Purple Palace), which has been trading in Tooting since 1994, has opened its doors again after a temporary closure.

All food is halal and vegetarian options are available. Open 12pm-1am Sunday to Thursday, and 12pm-2am Friday and Saturday for eat-in, takeaway and delivery.

Celebrating the Tooting Granada! A blue plaque was unveiled at Buzz Bingo Tooting (formerly the Granada) at 50 Mitcham Road on Saturday 27th June, celebrating the many acts that performed there when it was a music venue!

Local historian Geoff Simmons spearheaded the campaign, and said on his Instagram, “THAT’S MY BABY! What a feeling to finally see this beautiful historic plaque placed outside Tooting Granada/Buzz Bingo Hall! Huge thanks to Richard Gray, Linda Cazeaux, Allen Eyles, Rita Ray, Linda, Winston, Tim, Robert, Mahesh & all our other lovely unveilers - to Fred, courtesy of DJ Jonesy whose sounds rekindled ‘The Vegas of South London’ on Mitcham Road! A local teenager competing in this month’s Commonwealth Games has praised a surgeon at Tooting’s St George’s Hospital for saving her sporting career, after her dream was threatened by a devastating injury.

Judo champion Frema Agyei feared her competing days were over, after a torn ligament led to further issues.

The 17-year-old was just 16 when she sustained the injury, which left her unable to perform without extreme pain.

The A-level student from Colliers Wood first realised something was wrong when she felt a searing pain in her left wrist during practice.

She said: “As part of my judo, I have to do body conditioning which includes pull-ups and push-ups – but I was in so much pain, it was impossible.

“In turn, that affected my performance as I was in pain with the most basic moves, so I just couldn’t do my judo.”

Frema was treated by Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon Shamim Umarji and her team at St George’s.

Frema was told that she had a torn ligament, resulting in a ganglion cyst forming in her wrist – which is a thick, jelly-like fluid that develops along the joints or tendons. To treat the cyst, Frema was given an injection to drain the fluid and a week later had an ultrasound-guided sterile injection, where ultrasound imaging was used to guide a needle into her wrist.

A few months later, she was able to return to competing and went on to qualify for Glasgow 2026, representing Ghana – where her father is from – in the under 57kg category.

Frema said: “Miss Umarji saved my sporting career, without a doubt. If it wasn’t for her, I probably would have struggled in competitions. There are no words to describe how grateful I am to her.”

As well as treating Frema, Shami also arranged for her to shadow her team on work experience, to help her choose between two career paths – becoming a doctor or a dentist.

Frema’s father Kofi echoed his daughter’s praise for the care Frema received.

“We need more people in the NHS like Miss Umarji,” he said. “She is amazing and can turn water into wine in my eyes. She listened to us – she was like the man from Del Monte and said ‘yes’ – we wouldn’t be going to Glasgow if it wasn’t for her. Miss Umarji has made such a big impact in our lives.”

Frema has shared her story as she urges people to celebrate their health heroes at St George’s, Epsom and St Helier Hospitals and Health Group (gesh) at the third ‘gesh CARE Awards’.

All NHS colleagues are recognised – from the clinical frontline to essential support colleagues, including porters, cleaners and volunteers.  

Frema said: “These awards are a great way for the public to vote for dedicated NHS workers like Miss Umarji, who have gone the extra mile to help their patients.”

Police were called at around 11.30pm on Thursday, 25 June to reports of an altercation involving a group of young people on Southcroft Road in Tooting.

Two men intervened in the altercation, during which one of the men, aged in his 30s, was stabbed.

Officers attended with paramedics and the man was taken to hospital with knife wounds to his head and arm. His injuries were deemed to be neither life-threatening nor life-changing and he has been discharged from hospital.

The group that carried out the assault fled the scene. A14-year-old boy was subsequently arrested near the scene on suspicion of affray. He has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting CAD 9956/25JUN26.

Work on the A23 Streatham Hill, just up the road from Tooting, will begin at the end of the month, with temporary traffic restrictions in place while the scheme is delivered.

From Monday 29 June, phase four of the project will see the construction of new central islands as part of a wider transformation of the road. These will aim to provide safer waiting areas for pedestrians crossing the road and help separate traffic flows. The changes will include protected cycle lanes, new pedestrian crossings and continuous bus lanes, designed to reduce road danger and make it safer and easier for people to walk, cycle and use public transport.

Overnight closures will be in place between 10pm on Sunday 28 June and 5am on Tuesday 30 June, between Christchurch Road and Sternhold Avenue. This will take place across two separate overnight closures: from 10pm on Sunday 28 June to 5am on Monday 29 June, and from 10pm on Monday 29 June to 5am on Tuesday 30 June.

The first closure will affect the southern section of the scheme (Sternhold Avenue to Telford Avenue), while the second closure will cover the northern section (Telford Avenue to Christchurch Road). These closures are taking place during the summer period when traffic levels are normally lower, and they’ve been scheduled to avoid other major roadworks where possible. The plan aims to minimise disruption to users as much as possible.

From 5am on Monday 29 June until August 2026, traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction. Daytime works for this phase are expected to complete by 9 August, followed by a period of overnight resurfacing works later in August. People travelling in the area are being advised to plan ahead and allow more time for their journeys.

There will also be temporary changes including bus stop relocations, side road closures, pedestrian diversions and parking suspensions. TfL is encouraging people to walk, cycle or use public transport during this time and for drivers to consider alternative routes.

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters tackled a fire on Mitcham Lane in Furzedown in the early hours of this morning, Saturday 27th June. The fire is believed to have been caused by a lightning strike.

The fire occurred in an end of terrace shop with dwellings above that was under construction. The roof of the building was destroyed by the fire. There were no reports of any injuries.

One of London Fire Brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders was used at the scene was an observation tower, providing the Incident Commander with an aerial view of the fire.

Control Officers took the first of 17 calls at 4.17am and mobilised crews from Tooting, Norbury, West Norwood and surrounding fire stations to the scene. The fire was extinguished by 6.24am.

Local resident Niall Barrett told us, “Most at the scene described it as The loudest bang they had ever heard! It even set off the alarms at St Albans Church, which is 200 metres away. The lightning strike also blew out the electrics at The Furzedown Pub across the road.”

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Wandsworth literacy charity Learn to Love to Read has won the Best Charity award 🎉 at this year’s Wandsworth Business Awards – and need volunteers to help them continue their vital work.

The charity, which works with primary schools across South West London, was recognised for its work helping children develop confidence, improve literacy skills and discover a genuine love of reading.

Learn to Love to Read helps children discover the joy of reading from their earliest years. Through parent and child classes in libraries, schools and community settings, songs and story sessions delivered with family support organisations, and one-to-one reading volunteers in primary schools, the charity helps children build confidence, develop a love of books and create strong foundations for learning.

The charity is now looking for local people who can spare a small amount of time each week to support pupils at Swaffield Primary School in Earlsfield.

Tara Coffin, Director of Learn to Love to Read, tells us, “Winning Best Charity was a wonderful recognition of the difference our volunteers and team make every week. At the heart of everything we do is helping children discover that reading can be enjoyable, empowering and life-changing.

Congratulations to 8-year old Oliver, who spent his May half term taking on a fundraising cycle ride for Tooting’s St George’s Hospital Charity – his very own Tour D’Isle of Wight, in memory of his grandad who sadly passed away earlier this year.

Once Oliver came up with the idea of cycling a full lap of the Isle of Wight, there was no stopping him. He and his dad, John, cycled an amazing 114km in the heatwave! His mum and sister, Kate and Alice, followed along the route, turning the whole adventure into a family effort to raise money for the hospital that cared for his grandad.

In Oliver’s own words: “I wanted to do it because grandad died and I wanted to raise money for the hospital he was in. Whilst doing it, I felt super super super tired and super super super happy that I was doing it. Now that I’ve done it I feel super (x10) happy and super (x10) tired.” 💙

His family shared how the St George’s Cardiac Unit cared for his grandad with compassion and dignity, making his Christmas stay as memorable and warm as possible. That kindness is something they will never forget.

Oliver has already raised nearly £2,000 in his grandad’s memory. A little boy with a huge heart - pedalling through with love and determination. Well done, Oliver! You’re a superstar. 🌟

Stacey and Tom have launched New People London, a project to help Londoners connect and make real friends in their local area.

Stacey tells us, “The idea came from personal experience. After going through redundancy last year, I noticed how quickly the social scaffolding disappears, and how hard it is to make genuine friends as an adult in a big city. We started building this because it’s something we wished existed.

“We’re running our first ever get together in Tooting on Sunday 28 June. It will be a relaxed Sunday afternoon of easy conversation, delicious snacks and engaged hosts to keep things flowing comfortably. Afterwards, we’ll match attendees with the people they clicked with, to help good connections turn into great friendships.”

Queer Wandsworth, a free outdoor exhibition on Totterdown Street behind Tooting Market, is now on until Monday 6 July.

The exhibition, presented across a series of vibrant cube installations, shares powerful stories of LGBTQ+ life in Wandsworth, past and present. It invites visitors to explore at their own pace, day or night. Discover well-known landmarks and hidden histories, and learn how local people and places have played an important role in shaping queer history in the UK.

Through artwork, archival material and community voices, Queer Wandsworth celebrates resilience, creativity and pride.

Nick Collinson (The Urban Rambler), Queer Wandsworth Researcher and Curator, says, “The Queer Wandsworth project has been a chance to uncover and share stories that have often been overlooked in more traditional histories of the borough.

“Over the past year, through research, community consultation and archival work, we’ve built up a picture of a rich and wide-ranging queer history, from nightlife, performance and activism to everyday relationships, social spaces and local lives.

“The exhibition is about bringing those stories into public view and showing that LGBTQ+ history is not something separate from Wandsworth’s history, it is woven through it. I hope people come away with a new understanding of the borough and the many different people who have shaped it over time.”

The Met Office has expanded its extreme heat warning for the UK, predicting record-breaking highs of 38C (100.4F) this week.

The Met Office forecasts that extremely high temperatures could last from Monday until Thursday, leading to health concerns for elderly and vulnerable people. Full story via The Guardian.

Tips on staying cool from the Met Office:

Stay well hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid excessive consumption of caffeine and alcohol. If you’re out and about, carry a reusable water bottle and refill it regularly.

Choose lightweight, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Light colours reflect sunlight and help keep your body temperature down. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses will also provide protection from the sun, especially during peak UV hours.

Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, typically 11am-3pm. If you need to be outside, take regular breaks in the shade and pace yourself. Children, older adults and those with underlying health conditions should take extra care to avoid overheating.

Close curtains or blinds during the day to block out direct sunlight. Open windows in the early morning and late evening to allow cooler air to circulate. If possible, use a fan to improve airflow, and consider placing a bowl of ice in front of it for a cooling effect.

Warm nights can make sleeping difficult. To improve comfort, use lightweight bedding and consider sleeping in the coolest room of your home. A cool shower before bed can help lower your body temperature. Keep windows open if safe to do so, and use a fan to maintain airflow.

High temperatures and humidity can lead to heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Symptoms include dizziness, nausea, headache, excessive sweating and confusion. If you or someone else shows signs of heat-related illness, move to a cooler place, hydrate and seek medical advice if necessary.

During periods of extreme heat, it’s important to check on vulnerable neighbours, friends and family members. Ensure they have access to cool spaces, adequate hydration and support if needed.

Tooting firefighters joined the Furzedown Fun Day festivities last Saturday, to chat with the community, provide info on fire safety, and offer local residents the chance to sit in a fire engine! 🚒

London Fire Brigade aren’t just here to put out fires – they also do important work in the community to raise awareness and help prevent fires before they happen.
